Into 2012- Nebraska is on the horizon.

The team is excited and off to a good start in the new year. Much progress was achieved over the winter break. The chassis is assembled in the jig and has undergone one round of welding. The mock engine / mounts await the next round. The team is eager to obtain a new weight of the chassis, as a new design was implemented last term. Many strategies were used to increase the driver / leg compartment volumes, while keeping weight down. All tubes on the 2012 car are chrome moly 4130, which is a significant change from the 2011 car which used a mixture of chrome moly and mild steel. Cartesian Profiling did an excellent job laser cutting all 83 pieces of Chrome Moly tubing and bending both roll hoops. Pictures to come soon.

FUBC Returns from the Formula SAE California Competition

Formula UBC would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters for all their help and contributions towards aiding the team in completing a race car for the 2011 competition year.

The Formula UBC journey to the competition was a 30 hour non-stop crusade down the I-5, towing the UBC Formula trailer. Taking shifts driving, fueled only by determination, we arrived in Fontana ready to tackle the upcoming challenges. Unfortunately, Formula UBC was forced to settle for a disappointing 54th place overall finish. However, the team took solace in the fact that we were able to pass the tech inspections with an un-tested, completely revised car. Judges complemented our compact frame design around the engine, which was also 10 pounds lighter than the previous chassis. The new compact design was key in reducing the moment of inertia about yaw axis thus increasing agility. Additionally, several other teams took interest in our 5-axis machined, aircraft grade aluminum uprights that we designed.

Although Formula UBC was unable to compete in the dynamic events of the competition, the team was able to learn a great deal by going to California. The competition was a valuable opportunity to talk to other teams about their designs and ideas, as well as learn from their hardships. Sharing ingenuity between teams, we are keen to apply the knowledge that we have obtained into the design of the 2012 car. Furthermore, by talking with design judges and ex- participants of the competition, the team was able to learn and understand what it really takes to become a successful team. The simple changes suggested by the judges and our colleagues were eye opening and will undoubtedly prove helpful to the future growth of our team. We have already set new design goals and plans of action in order to make a much stronger showing next year.

New Members and Construction Progress

We have recruited 20 new motivated members to help make this year one of the most sucessful yet. The new members have been assigned to subgroups and we are looking forward to their contributions. We also have started to make progress in constructing this years car. Work on the frame and engine has begun and composite work will begin in the next few weeks.

New Year Begins!

The school year is now under way along with the 2010-2011 Formula UBC car! The team is back from various summer Co-op jobs around BC, and the world, and we’re all excited to get back to work on the new car. Interested in joining the team? A new members meeting will be announced in the next few weeks where you can come out, and learn what Formula UBC is all about. The meeting will consist of a short presentation on each system on the car, the structure of the team, and information on how to apply. Check back over the next few weeks for more details!
