The Formula UBC journey to the competition was a 30 hour non-stop crusade down the I-5, towing the UBC Formula trailer. Taking shifts driving, fueled only by determination, we arrived in Fontana ready to tackle the upcoming challenges. Unfortunately, Formula UBC was forced to settle for a disappointing 54th place overall finish. However, the team took solace in the fact that we were able to pass the tech inspections with an un-tested, completely revised car. Judges complemented our compact frame design around the engine, which was also 10 pounds lighter than the previous chassis. The new compact design was key in reducing the moment of inertia about yaw axis thus increasing agility. Additionally, several other teams took interest in our 5-axis machined, aircraft grade aluminum uprights that we designed.

Although Formula UBC was unable to compete in the dynamic events of the competition, the team was able to learn a great deal by going to California. The competition was a valuable opportunity to talk to other teams about their designs and ideas, as well as learn from their hardships. Sharing ingenuity between teams, we are keen to apply the knowledge that we have obtained into the design of the 2012 car. Furthermore, by talking with design judges and ex- participants of the competition, the team was able to learn and understand what it really takes to become a successful team. The simple changes suggested by the judges and our colleagues were eye opening and will undoubtedly prove helpful to the future growth of our team. We have already set new design goals and plans of action in order to make a much stronger showing next year.
